Renault Mégane I Classic to jedna z aż 5 wersji nadwoziowych tego francuskiego kompaktu. Jak sama nazwa wskazuje, sedan skierowany jest do klientów pragnących samochodu o bardziej klasycznym kształcie.
Dzisiaj jest to absolutnie nie do pomyślenia, ale nawet w latach 90. nieczęsto zdarzało się aby jeden model można było kupić w tylu różnych wariantach. Renault oferowało pierwsze Mégane nie tylko jako pięciodrzwiowego hatchbacka, ale również coupé, kabriolet, minivana Scénic (na początku zaliczał się do gamy Mégane I) i sedana Classic. Dla każdego coś miłego.
Samochód zaprojektowany przez Patricka Le Quement uchodził w momencie debiutu w 1995 roku za awangardowy. Dla osób dla których taki styl był zbyt odważny i dla tych którzy chcieli bardziej rodzinny pojazd, w 1996 roku Renault zaprezentowało sedana. Jego bardziej tradycyjny charakter firma podkreśliła nazwą Classic.
Classic miał długość 443,6 cm i był dłuższy od hatchbacka o 30,7 cm. Wszystkie dodatkowe centymetry powędrowały za tylną oś do przestrzeni bagażowej, która może pochwalić się pojemnością 500 litrów (o 160 litrów więcej niż w hatchbacku). Cała reszta była już taka sama jak w hatchbacku.
Auto bazowało więc na znacznie zmodyfikowanej płycie Renault 19, dzięki czemu zapewniało lepszy komfort jazdy, prowadzenie oraz ochronę w razie kolizji. Bezpieczeństwo pasażerów było zresztą w centrum uwagi konstruktorów, którzy zastosowali dodatkowe wzmocnienia drzwi, efektywniejsze pasy bezpieczeństwa i poduszki powietrzne już w podstawowych wersjach. Wysiłki poskutkowały bardzo dobrymi wynikami we wczesnych testach zderzeniowych EuroNCAP – Mégane okazało się jednym z najbezpieczniejszych aut.
Gama jednostek napędowych w całości pokrywała się z tymi w hatchbacku. Do wyboru były więc benzynowe silniki 1.4/1.4e (70/75 KM), 1.6 (90 KM) i 2.0 (115 KM) oraz diesle 1.9 D (65 KM), 1.9 dT (95 KM) i 1.9 dTi (100 KM).
Classic wraz z całą gamą Mégane przeszedł znaczący lifting w 1999 roku. Zmiany objęły cały samochód; nadwozie, wnętrze, poziomy wyposażenia oraz gamę silnikową. Produkcję i sprzedaż wersji Classic zakończono w 2003 roku, kilka miesięcy po zaprezentowaniu Mégane drugiej generacji.
O miniaturze – Renault Mégane I Classic
Oto mój najnowszy nabytek, który dotarł do mnie przedwczoraj. Modelik znalazłem na ebayu. Mam już wprawdzie jedno Renault Mégane I Classic od dawna w kolekcji (przedstawiałem je nawet na blogu w 2012 roku), ale cena poniżej 50 zł była tak atrakcyjna, że żal było nie kupić drugiego. Takim sposobem mam więc w kolekcji parkę przedliftowych Mégane I sedan.
Producentem modelu jest firma Vitesse, która z tego co wiem, już dawno nie istnieje. Jej miniaturki znane są wśród kolekcjonerów, ale cieszą się mieszaną opinią. Renault Mégane I Classic to jednak jeden z ich najlepszych modeli. Autko wygląda naprawdę dobrze, pomimo że ma już 30 lat! Znajdziemy tutaj dużo pozytywów: właściwe proporcje, ładny i czysty lakier w odcieniu szary Xerus oraz dobry poziom odwzorowania detali. Ładnie wygląda wzorzysta tapicerka, typowa dla aut z lat 90. Bonusowym dodatkiem są też otwierane przednie drzwi.
Jedynym minusem modelu są jak dla mnie tylne światła wykonane z malowanego matowego plastiku. Szkod, bo perfekcja była tak blisko! Wystarczyło wykonać je z barwionego przezroczystego plastiku. Mimo to, modelik oceniam wysoko. Niech o jego jakości świadczy też fakt, że niedawno w argentyńskiej serii ukazało się Renault Mégane I Classic z nowego odlewu IXO i jest gorsze od starego Vitesse. Na koniec dodam, że w modeliku wprowadziłem jedną zmianę; dodałem czarne polskie blachy.

The Renault Mégane I Classic is one of five body styles of this French compact car. As the name suggests, the saloon is aimed at customers looking for a car with a more classic shape.
Today, it’s almost unthinkable, but even in the 90’s it was rare for a single model to be available in so many different variants. Renault offered the first-generation Mégane not only as a five-door hatchback, but also as a coupé, convertible, the Scénic MPV (initially part of the Mégane I range), and the Classic sedan. There was certainly something for everyone.
Designed by Patrick Le Quément, the car was seen as avant-garde upon its 1995 debut. For buyers who considered the styling too daring and for those wanting a more family-friendly option, Renault introduced the saloon in 1996. Its more conventional character was emphasized by the name “Classic.”
The Classic was 443.6 cm long, making it 30.7 cm longer than the hatchback. Renault added all of the extra length behind the rear axle to increase boot space, resulting in a 500-litre capacity—160 litres more than the hatchback. Otherwise, the two models were identical.
The car was thus based on a substantially modified Renault 19 platform. This contributed to improved ride comfort, handling and crash protection. Passenger safety was a key focus for the engineers, who added extra door reinforcements, more effective seatbelts and airbags even in the base specifications. These efforts led to very good results in the early EuroNCAP crash tests, with the Mégane emerging as one of the safest cars.
The engine range was identical to that of the hatchback. Buyers could choose from petrol engines: 1.4/1.4e (70/75 hp), 1.6 (90 hp) and 2.0 (115 hp), as well as diesel engines: 1.9 D (65 hp), 1.9 dT (95 hp) and 1.9 dTi (100 hp).
The Classic, along with the entire Mégane range, received a substantial facelift in 1999. The updates extended throughout the car, including the exterior, interior, trim levels and engine lineup. Renault ended production and sales of the Mégane Classic in 2003, a few months after introducing the second-generation Mégane.
About the miniature – Renault Mégane I Classic
Here is my latest purchase, which arrived the day before yesterday. I found the model on eBay. I already have a Renault Mégane I Classic in my collection (I even posted it on my blog back in 2012), but the price was too good to pass up, so I bought another one. That’s how I now have a pair of pre-facelift Mégane I saloons in my collection.
This is a model by Vitesse, a company that, as far as I know, no longer exists. Their miniatures are well known among collectors, but they have a mixed reputation. However, the Renault Mégane I Classic is one of their better models. The car looks really good despite being 30 years old! There are many positives here: correct proportions, a nice and clean paint finish in Xerus grey and a good level of detail. The patterned upholstery, typical of 90’s cars, also looks great. An added bonus is the opening front door.
I only have an issue with the rear lights, which are made from painted matte plastic. It’s a shame, because perfection was so close—tinted clear plastic would have made all the difference! Even so, I rate the model highly. Its quality is also highlighted by the fact that a Renault Mégane I Classic was recently released in an Argentinian series using a new IXO casting and it’s actually worse than this older Vitesse version. Finally, I should mention that I made one modification to the model: I added old black Polish license plates.
