The phrase “don’t judge a book by its cover” is perfectly applicable to the Fiat Regata. The looks of the car are exceptionally humble – it’s just another compact car. A jigsaw puzzle of other Fiats, although – ironically – not of the Ritmo on which Regata is based. The powertrain won’t cause any goosebumps either – there is a lack of innovative engines or superpowerful variants. Boring. Even a record amount of cabin space doesn’t help much. Surprisingly though, the Fiat Regata is actually quite an interesting car. All thanks to the equipment. In this model, Fiat was one of the first to use electronically controlled ventilation. The rivals had to wait at least until late 80s for similar solutions. Another innovation was the Checkpoint – a precursor of the on-board computer informing the driver about things such as low engine oil and coolant levels, condition of bulbs in the headlights and opened doors. However, Fiat’s true visionary mind was shown in the ES (Energy Saver) versions or more precisely – in the Citymatic technology used in them. It worked on a similar basis to the Start-stop system – it switched off the engine when the car was stationary (e.g at the traffic lights) in order to save fuel. It did so more than 20 years before the Start-stop systems became popular. After all, the marketing slogan “A journey in space” wasn’t used for no reason.
it really is something to concentrate on. The light-blue Regata made by the Italian
manufacturer Kess Models as a limited edition of only 250 pieces is the first
resin model in my collection. So I definitely felt excitement when opening the
box. After I opened it, the thing that surprised me the most was the smell,
which reminded me of brand new pencil cases. The model itself however, makes a
great impression. The manufacturer put a lot of effort into the detail both
inside and out. The door handles, screen surrounds and the fascia all look
beautiful. Unfortunately my sample has a small blemish on the back door on the
driver’s side (most likely to be remains of glue). The exhaust could also be
more subtle. Nevertheless, it is the best 1:43 model I own and it definitely
won’t be the last resin model.
September 1983. The model was based mechanically on the Fiat Ritmo and was
available in two bodystyles: saloon and an estate (Weekend – introduced in
’84). The car was powered by petrol engines: 1.3/68 HP (Regata 70), 1.5/75-80
HP (Regata 75 ie and 85), 1.6/90-105 HP (Regata 90i, 100 S and 100i), 1.8/107
HP and 2.0/110 HP (Regata Twincam), and diesels: 1.7 D/60 HP, 1.9 D/65 HP
(Regata D and DS respectively). The estate was available with all of the
diesels and petrol 1.3 and 1.6 engines. In 1986 the model received a facelift. New
door handles, grille, bumpers and wheel trims were featured. A new turbocharged
diesel was also added to the range – 1.9 TD/80 HP. On the Swedish and Latin American
markets the car was sold with the Regatta name. The model was manufactured in
Italy, Argentina and Spain and also in Turkey under a license as the Tofaş
Şahin/Dogan. Based on the Regata was
also Seat Malaga.

Model technicznie bazował na Fiacie Ritmo. Dostępny był w dwóch
wersjach nadwozia: sedan i kombi (Weekend – w ofercie od ’84 r.). Model napędzany
był benzynowymi silnikami: 1.3/68 KM (wersja 70), 1.5/75-80 KM (wersje 75 ie i
85), 1.6/90-105 KM (wersje 90i, 100 S i 100i), 1.8/107 KM i 2.0/110 KM (wersja
Twincam), oraz dieslami: 1.7 D/60 KM, 1.9 D/65 KM (odpowiednio wersje D i DS.)
W Kombi oferowano wszystkie diesle oraz benzynowe jednostki 1.3 i 1.6. W 1986
r. model przeszedł lifting. Delikatnie zmieniono wygląd
przedniego pasa, zastosowano także nowe klamki. Do oferty dołączył
turbodiesel 1.9 TD/80 KM. Na rynku szwedzkim i latynoamerykańskim
auto występowało pod nazwą Regatta. Samochód wytwarzano we Włoszech,
Argentynie i Hiszpanii, a na licencji także w Turcji jako
Tofaş Şahin/Dogan. Na bazie Regaty sedan stworzono również Seata Malagę.
